Warning: Lots of complaining and ranting to follow.
Oh my goodness. The last few weeks has brought on some major STRESS. Let me start at the beginning of our moving debacle.
Way back when I thought everything was going to go smoothly, I had our move all planned out. The house was to be painted and new hardwood floor laid before we even moved in. Well, that plan fell apart when we were told that our new hardwood would take a month to get in versus a week. The original date it was to arrive was December 28th, while we were planning on moving in on December 10th, with our old house closing on December 14th.
The Monday before our move, I called Comcast to schedule them to come out and install our cable/internet at the new house. The earliest they could get a technician out was the following Monday, while we moved in on Thursday. After 3 phone calls, I was able to get a technician to come out on the day of our move.
Fast forward to the actual packing/move. Amazingly, this was the easiest part of the whole process! We hired a moving company to come pack and move for us. 3 guys came out and packed up everything the day before the move and they were amazing. The day of the move went without a hitch as well, with the movers being amazing again.
Well, the Comcast technician came out on the day of the move and insisted that our house was not ready to have cable installed yet. He said we needed some type of thing installed since it was a brand new development. I argued with him for a few minutes because it was hard for me to believe that everything wouldn't be ready. In short, he was a jerk and took off.
Well, at this point, the earliest we could get someone to come out was the following Wednesday (another 6 days without internet/cable.) I know it sounds petty, but things are rough when you have no cable or internet for a week!
The good news (or so I thought) was that our hardwood actually came in early and was in on the 9th. We had decided to use a contractor that was recommended to us by our real estate agent to do the install and the plan was for him to start on December 21st. According to him, it would take him about 4 days to install hardwood into our formal living room, office, main living room and upstairs playroom. He charges hourly, so when he gave me the quote, I had calculated 4 full days of work at his hourly rate. When I compared it to a quote I had received from a different company, his quote was quite a bit cheaper, which is why we chose him.
Well, without getting into too many details, our contractor was horrible. Just horrible! One of the first things that happened was that he fell down the stairs, scraping our freshly painted railing. Then we found out he had lent his flooring stapler (which was required for this job) to someone else. Scott was able to find one for him to buy at a local store. He also thought it was fine to show up to start working at 10 or 11am. It's hard to get a full day's work in when you show up halfway through the day!
After 28 hours of work (almost 4 full days), he still had not finished a single room! After 2 weeks, we still had boxes and things sitting out because we couldn't move them into the office or playroom. At this rate, he was going to be more expensive than the company who could have come in with a crew of men and gotten it done within a few days. Well, we couldn't take it any longer and let him go.
Luckily, I was able to get our painter to come in on Thursday and he finished caulking and touching up the baseboards in the office and playroom, so we FINALLY have those 2 rooms done! (Which is why I am finally sitting at my computer blogging.) I was able to get another installer who is going to come by this Thursday to finish the front formal living room and the main living room, which should only take him one day.
Neither Scott nor I do well when things are out of sort and we don't have a routine. It's also been hard because we haven't been able to have the kids' play area set up, so a lot of their toys are still put away, etc. So, fingers crossed that we'll be able to start enjoying our new home by the end of next week!
