The past few months, we've noticed that Decker has been throwing tantrums at times and will seem restless. It also seems that whenever we ask him to get off the iPad, he will just sit there on it, not listening, which then causes a big blow up. Although this behavior was bad, what really got our attention is when he started waking up early on the weekends just to play with the iPad! I'm not going to lie...this really freaked me out.
I started researching iPad addiction in kids and effects of it on kids and I was not happy with what I read! I came across everything from ADHD to focus problems to causing learning problems down the road.
We generally allow him to be on his iPad in the mornings before school (while I'm getting Kressa dressed and ready), then for a bit after school and then before bed. Of course, there are times when I will give it to him just so he will sit down quietly. Well, all this research got me thinking that we really needed to just remove it completely for awhile. And this doesn't just apply to him. I realize that Scott and I need to reduce the time we spend on our phones. It seriously is like an addiction. Like we can't stand to just sit for a moment in silence without something taking over our brains or thinking.
So, Sunday (after he had woken up early to play with it), I explained to him that he wasn't going to play with it for awhile. So far, it's been pretty good. He's asked to play with it a couple of times, but there hasn't been much fussing. I'm hoping that by taking it away we will start to see a bit of improvement in his behavior and he will start using his imagination more and be content with playing with his normal toys, without all of the fancy graphics. We haven't decided yet if and/or when we will re-introduce it.
